Well im not sure if this is exactly accurate but did Dbz start when Akira Toriyama drew little newspaper cartoons and that he got db of a cinese show!

I think db was suposed to be based on an old TV show called Monkey King (or something like that), in which the hero was a human-like monkey. I don't know if thats true or not though.

all I know is that the chinese show Monkey and some bits of dbz look like they have inbred parents.
..The Monkey king flies around on a cloud, and fight with a powerpole (although it aint called that)

Didn't Planet Namek (before it died) say it was based off of an old chinese legend called "Journey to the West?"
And ya I think Akira Toriyama started drawing it in some comic thing

yeah it was based on Journey To The West, which as Podge said this human like monkey rode on a cloud and hit people with a stick... hehe. Even some of the character names are the same like Tenshinhan and Yamcha were animals that joined him on his way... just like in DB.

Yeah Dragonball was based on the Chinese tale "Journey to the West?" about a monkey boy, but I think the dragonballs, monkey boy, power pole, and nimbus is about all he got from that story (maybe some names)
